Dear Dot & Bill:
I would have written sooner but they’ve been keeping us pretty busy. I called up home the other night and Dad told me that you two were going to have Christmas in Whitman. I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas. I would appreciate it if you would send me directions as to how to get to your home. From the Grand Central Station in New York. I can get a bus from the camp to there. That is as far as I know about. We had a very good Christmas dinner here today. They gave us just about everything you could want. We have a drill with the rifle, bayonet, classes in marching, first aid, and field instructions. It hasn’t been too tough as yet. Other than a head cold, I haven’t had any troubles. The fellows are a pretty good bunch of guys. We have quite a few from New York and New Jersey and some from Brockton, Mass. Leo Hurley1 is in the next barracks to me and I see him quite a bit. He had K.P. today. I had it last week plus two extra work details. We had to get up at 3:00 AM and we didn’t get through until 7:30 that night. I hope that everyone is in good health and that Dot’s folks are all fine. I think of everyone all the time. I guess that’s about all for now, so I will close. Give my love to all.
Sincerely,
Eddie
Notes:
- Leo Hurley gave an oral history of Whitman that is available at the internet archive.
