The World’s Fair

The 1939/40 New York World’s Fair, held in Flushing near what is now Citi Field where the Mets play, was a major event for the younger members of the Figueroa family (Dorothy b. 1921, James b. 1924, Richard b. 1926, Robert b. 1928, and Jerome b. 1930).

The Sultan of Swat had already retired, but made an appearance at the Fair, as captured in these photos by James.

The Long Walk Home

Uncle Robbie would tell his story of walking home from the Fair after getting separated from his siblings. He had spent all his change on the various amusements and didn’t have bus fare, but did remember the route back home to 103-36 108th Street, near Liberty Avenue. He needed to get around Forest Park, and my recollection is that he took Woodhaven Boulevard, although today’s routing would be along the Grand Central Parkway service road.

Dorothy was supposed to wrangle her younger brothers, and as you might imagine, losing your younger brother was not supposed to happen. Fortunately Robbie eventually found his way home, but not after scaring his parents.

Robbie also told of going to the movies with his older sister. Back then you could stay and watch the next showing, which they did one Saturday for The Ghost Goes West, and didn’t come home in time for supper. Robbie recalls his father walking down the aisle with the matron to be fetch him, but thought that ‘Dotsy’ was the best.
